Highlights

The March/April issue of “Eletricidade Moderna” is online. Check it out on page 24 article “The hidden cost of cheap distribution grids”, which discusses the grid architecture and suggests improvements. In February, a high voltage cable fell into a swimming pool in Paraná, killing three people and injuring nine, adding to the statistics of accidents involving overhead grids and giving rise to the defense of underground grids. See on page 36 the article “Controversy of ESEs in protection against atmospheric discharges”, addressing technical aspects that encourage debate between engineers and scientists. Proponents of Early Streamer Emission capturers highlight advances in protection against lightning strikes, but in general the scientific community is skeptical about the effectiveness of these devices. Furthermore, on page 40, the article “Differential voltage protection of the distribution grid”, describing a voltage variation solution using ADMS tools. Overcurrent protection devices have limitations when dealing with high impedance faults, mainly involving broken conductors, in which cases the cable may remain energized until customers notify the distributor.  This issue also brings the new “Thermal imaging cameras” and the update “Lightning protection products”, “Harmonic filters” and “Surge protection devices” buyers’ guides.
