Highlights

The September/October issue of “Eletricidade Moderna” is online. The article “Harmonics in neutral conductor: analysis of ABNT, IEC and VDE standards”, on page 16, shows that the presence of non-linear loads requires caution in dimensioning the section of neutral conductors. The standards propose different approaches and lack data on expected harmonic distortion in the future installation, but VDE standard indicates typical parameters for a pre-assessment in the design phase. See on page 50 the article “Operational improvement of power plants from renewable sources”, showing that, in order to improve the management of its assets, ‘CPFL Renováveis’ has invested in the creation of a monitoring center that provides information on the operation of equipment, with diagnostics and prognoses, enabling monitoring and intervention according to strategic planning. Furthermore, on page 56, the article “High leakage currents in frequency inverters”, focusing on defined limits for protective conductors and filters for EMC improvement. High leakage currents are generally attributed to the extensive use of frequency inverters in drives. To avoid or compensate for these currents, there are normative prescriptions and practical methods. This issue brings also the update “Cable conduits, trays, ladders, channels and ducting systems” and “AC variable frequency drives and soft starters” buyers’ guides, and “Engineering and technical services companies” directory.
